Benefit finding—the ability to identify positive aspects within difficult experiences—is a well-researched component of resilience and post-adversity growth (Helgeson et al., 2022; Affleck & Tennen, replication studies through 2023). Regularly practicing this skill strengthens cognitive flexibility and builds a more balanced appraisal style over time. Research in positive psychology (Seligman, 2021) shows that people who consistently look for silver linings report greater life satisfaction, lower depressive symptoms, and stronger social support networks.
