The inhibitory-learning model is the modern scientific explanation for why facing your fears on purpose helps.   1. Drop safety behaviors and avoidance completely. Subtle crutches like reassurance-seeking, silent praying as a ritual, gripping a water bottle, or mentally reviewing escape routes give the fear memory an 'out' and let your brain credit the crutch instead of learning the situation was safe.Example: A client doing an exposure to driving stops white-knuckling the wheel and turns off the habit of silently saying 'I'm fine, I'm fine.' Without the crutch, the safe outcome can finally be attributed to the situation itself.
  2. Vary contexts and stimuli. Practice the same exposure in different places, times of day, moods, and forms. Fear that is unlearned in only one setting tends to come back in new ones; variability makes the safety learning portable.Example: Someone with contamination fears doesn't only touch the same trusted doorknob at home. They practice on public restroom handles, at a friend's house, when tired, and when already stressed, so the learning generalizes.
  3. Combine and deepen feared cues. Once single exposures are manageable, stack two feared elements together. This is called deepened extinction, where confronting multiple triggers at once produces stronger, more durable learning than tackling them one at a time forever.   5. Stay until you learn, not until you relax. End the exposure when the prediction has been clearly tested, even if anxiety is still present.
