Character Strengths Activation Planner

A structured weekly plan for intentionally deploying personal strengths to combat low mood

Positive psychology research demonstrates that people who identify and deliberately use their character strengths experience reduced depressive symptoms, greater life satisfaction, and increased psychological resilience (Schutte & Malouff, 2019; Niemiec, 2018). The VIA Classification of Character Strengths identifies 24 universal strengths, and studies show that using even one signature strength in a new way each day can produce measurable improvements in well-being for up to six months (Seligman et al., 2005; Gander et al., 2013). This planner helps you move from passive awareness of your strengths to active, intentional deployment. The goal is to reframe everyday moments as chances to express what is best in you, without adding tasks to your day.

Begin by identifying three of your top character strengths. If unsure, consider taking the free VIA Survey of Character Strengths for a personalized ranking. For each day of the week, choose one strength and write a specific, concrete plan for using it in a new or intentional way. At the end of each day, briefly note how the experience felt. After one week, review which strength-based actions had the greatest positive impact on your mood and energy.
