The original therapist manual for Motivational Enhancement Therapy, written by William Miller and colleagues for Project MATCH, the large NIAAA trial that compared three treatments for alcohol problems. It lays out a four-session MET protocol built on motivational interviewing and structured personal feedback, with session-by-session instructions, sample therapist language, and guidance for handling resistance and involving a significant other.
Clinicians and training programs still use it because it defined the MET approach and remains one of the most requested volumes in the series.
Run it with these materials
The motivation ruler, stages of change, and decisional balance worksheets slot directly into MET's feedback and commitment-building sessions, and the free AUDIT covers the structured assessment.
